Cahors, lies in a loop of
the river and in medieval times was a prosperous trading town and
still has a warren of ancient streets and squares. Pont Valentré,
the old bridge across the river Lot, with its three slim towers
and great Gothic arches, is still used daily. Today the town is still
busy and colourful with good shops, many cafes and restaurants and a
large market on Saturday mornings. Cahors has been producing red wine
for two thousand years and the vines around us go into making it.
Activities
Both the Dordogne to the north and the lovely Quercy countryside
south of us are within reasonable driving distance. You can come
across markets and fairs and sometimes country antique markets in the
villages and there are lots of restaurants to try, along with local
wines. There are boat hire bases in Cahors for a day on the river Lot
and you can also hire bicycles there.
Saint Cirq Lapopie lies on
the left bank of the river Lot, its honey coloured, red roofed houses
clambering up the steep hill that surrounds it, to the great Gothic
church that sits on top. Further along the river is Puy l'Evêque,
its streets of old houses and the square towers of the château
reflected in the slow moving water.
There are incredible underground caves at Padirac,
where you can take a boat trip along the underground stream deep
inside. Rocamadour is a well preserved
medieval town balanced precariously on the side of a cliff and worth a
visit.
